Masjid, Community Complex, Coventry Drive, Houston, Texas, USA.

The Dawoodi Bohra community in Houston is among the fastest growing community of the Dawoodi Bohra in the USA. It is primarily a business community with many in the Medical profession. A large Masjid site had been acquired in the 1980s on which a smaller project was built. With the increasing numbers and demands for educational facilities a new project was conceived by the community on this site in 1999.

A.jivanjee Architects were appointed as the design architects. The planning of the project was conceived as an Islamic Courtyard with the Masjid, Iwan(community hall), Madrassah and the administrative facilities surrounding a garden courtyard.

The masjid is to the north, the Iwan to the west, Madrassah to the east and administrative building to the south. The main entrance for the complex is located within the administration building with other secondary entrances along the perimeter of the complex. The centre garden courtyard is inspired by the courtyard space at Jame Anwar in Cairo.

The complex is surrounded by gardens and a car park for up to 200 cars.

This project is a unique community project in the USA. Traditional planning concept inspired by the Fatimi Architecture in Egypt has been blended with modern architectural and planning parameters to conform to local standards. Natural stone acquired from Egypt clad all the buildings blended with local materials. Intricate Fatimi details and calligraphy have been carefully selected and applied on this project.

White marble was obtained from the mines in Makrana , India where the marble for renowned monuments like the Taj Mahal were mined.
